Brunei Moving On Forest Conservation By James Kon
Bandar Seri Begawan - The Ministry of Primary Resources (MIPR) is moving forward in safeguarding Brunei's tropical forest for future generations, following the implementation of policies in conservation.
Minister Pehin Orang Kaya Setia Pahlawan Dato Seri Dr. Haji Awang Ahmad bin Haji Jumat outlined some of the policies implemented in protecting the natural tropical forest during a tree-planting event in support of Brunei's Heart of Borneo project for Citi's second Global Community Day yesterday.
The minister said: "As we understand, Brunei Darussalam has implemented the '1 tree felled plant 4' policy by the Forestry Department since 1993. The policy served as a short term strategy to restore and conserve forest, which has yielded positive result."
He added, "The policy on limiting forest products quota to 100,000 cubic meters has successful reduced uncontrolled logging activities. According to last year's statistics, Brunei recorded a fall of 2pc or some $2 million in the gross output for

primary forest sector as compared with 2002. The figures show a decrease from $28.7 million in year 2002 to $26.7 million in year 2006.
"The ministry (MIPR) in its long-term strategic plan will be pushing to gross output with the average value of $27 million per year from the forest primary sector."
The minister highlighted: "Forest is among the country's precious natural assets and it play an important role in a balanced ecosystem. The bio diversification of forests can also raise the harmony of living in the country."
Speaking of the economic opportunities from the forests, he said, "Vast opportunities can be opened up, based on the richness of forest biodiversity, for example non timber forest product which is in line with the development of bio product industry like medicinal, herbal, and cosmetic.
He added, "Eco and nature tourism can also be a main sector filled with potential to be developed based on the wealth of forest bio-diversification. And this is a message for all local entrepreneurs to be actively involved in the forest sector.
"As a catalyst towards non timber forest product, the ministry is currently implementing another project `Tropical Biodiversity Centre' which was launched on March 21, 2007 on World Forestry Day," he said. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin

local news from Brunei on Heart Of Borneo
BIMP-EAGA Lauds Good Progress In ‘Heart Of Borneo’ Roadmap
Davao - Regional governments last Friday lauded the good progress being made in preparing the roadmap in improving the lot of people in the interior of Borneo island, which is recognised as one of the most important centres of biological diversity in the world.
The 12th Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-MalaysiaPhilippines East Asean Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) Ministerial Meeting ended being upbeat on the efforts in preparing the documents, which will form the basis for the development of the roadmap toward realising the "Heart of Borneo" initiative.
"We recognise that economic growth and environmental management are inseparable and crucial to sustaining and improving the quality of life of the people in EAGA.
"As such, we urge the relevant agencies responsible for the Heart of Borneo programme to finalise and agree on their respective National Project Documents," said a joint statement here.
It was issued by the Philippines Presidential Advisor on the Peace Process of the Philippines, Jesus Dureza; Malaysia's Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Abdul Rahman Sulaiman; Indonesia's F)ecial Envoy for EAGA Tan Sri Dai Bachtiar; and Brunei's Second Minister of Foreign Affairs Pehin Datuk Lim Jock Seng.
Last January, the Malaysian, Brunei and Indonesian Governments signed an agreement to conserve the Heart of Borneo, which covers about 220,000sq km of equatorial rainforests and numerous wildlife species.
The collaboration is aimed at promoting sustainable development, protecting vital resources and reducing poverty.
They also took note of the progress in the implementation of the Sulu-Sulawesi Marine Ecoregion programme and urged the relevant agencies to support and sustain it.
Apart from that, they also urged senior officials to expedite the legalisation process of the BIMP-Facilitation Centre to enable it to function more effectively.
"We conveyed our commitment to improve our respective in-country coordination mechanisms as we continue to strengthen the institutional structures and coordinating mechanisms at the sub-regional level," the statement said.
Acknowledging the vital role of the private sector in realising the goal of BIMP-EAGA, they renewed their commitment to the establishment of a business-friendly policy and an enabling environment for the private sector to take advantage of the opportunities available.
They also hoped the BIMP-EAGA Business Council will expedite the implementation of its expanded consultative platform, thereby promoting a more inclusive and broader private sector representation and participation in development activities. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin

Bukit Lutut - day Two
Day Two
Morning Call by our friendy Gibbon started at 5.30 am. By 6 am( more than 10 group) the intensity getting stronger. Now all birds, even the loud Hornbills are joining the morning chorus of Rainforest. Sunrise was magical with Gibbon calling, birds chriping and scenery of misty rainforest canopy slowly opening up.
After simple breakfast of Bread with hot coffee, we pack up and depart camp at 7.15am. The first 20 minutes trek was excellent with many huge tree, cool, gibbon calling, hornbill shout here and there. Later journey going downhill, here is where my kneel start to hurt. It was steep down down down hill for more than 45 minutes. we stop occasionally and enjoy the sound of the forest. Then route up & down until we reach a ridge called Iban Long house peak ( story goes, once upon a time it was a Iban Longhouse, because they make some mistake, the whole house and the occupant become rock. We rest on top of the ridge for more than 30 minutes. It was a peacefull place, cooling with occasional sound of Gibbon calling. Finally we reach a river bank and start River Trekking like day one.The river scenery will paradise, gibbon calling, hornbill flying up and down and between trees, fish jumping out of water and birds chirping. at this moment i really forget of all the pain in my kneel during descenting those steep hill. I called this Paradise river route point.
fromhere continue down and uphill we reached another high point called Bukit Batu ( 500 ft). at the peak is a huge rock balancing on a norrow ridge, as if the huge rock can roll down any time. From now onward my kneel pain become more and more painful, every step is like needle poking into my kneel. Then at last we reached Temburong river at 12 noon after 5 hr of fast trekking ( normally today trip itself is 2 days 1 night).
We prepare lunch by the Temburong Riverbank thereafter follow one of the many temuai going down to Batang Duri.
It was like one of the those trip i did 20 years ago to Danum Valley Sabah, now become one of the world best rainforest destination. I believe Bukit Lutut will one day become a world class Nature destination. Leslie...

Expedition Bukit Lutut- Temburong
Brunei really the unexpected treasure to be discover.
Last week end, i just found another treasure here in Temburong - One of the green jewel of "Heart of Borneo".
We started trekking from Temburong River bank. First encounter more than 10 ripe Durian fruit fall from its branch, we only took 2, most already rotten. For those who do not know "DURIAN"- It is a tropical fruit either you love it or hate it. Its size range from softball to Basketball with spike every surface of it hard protective skin. ok it is a fruit either you like it or hate it.
From wild durian tree, we trek further in through secondary forest, very thick, Rattan branch with full of torns. Funny, during our first Stream crossing, we open our trekking shoes to advoid getting wet. Our veteran trekker smile at us. Later after we wear back our Trekking shoes,we found out that we are going to trek using the stream as our route. Now what the hack, dont bother to take off our shoes, after all many River crossing ahead, some places 2-3 ft deep. walking with wet shoes in the jungle is fun, cooling.
During those River trekking, I saw one of the most beautiful scenery in the Rainforest. After two hour trek we saw our first group of hornbill drinking water from the Stream, as we come closer they fly to the tree above, watching us. It was one of the many great moment. We name this place " Hornbill Point". We take a break enjoy the moment with Hornbill making their present felt.
From here, we start trekking uphill. Early trek is easy, after 30 minutes, hill become steeper and steeper. However, tree are bigger and bigger and sound of wild Argus pheasant also stronger & stronger. 2 hours of hill trekking we reach Argus Pheasant point. This is the place where we got the most call of Argus Pheasant ( It is a wild chicken of the Borneo Rainforest). Rest for 30 minutes" Lunch break"with sight,Sound & Smell, Sound by Argus Pheasant, Gibbon and Friends, sight by birds flying around, and smell by Wild boar.
Then continue uphill trekking. tree here are taller some 250 feet and bigger. track are also rocking , after 45 minutes trek, we saw a Deer ( Local called it Kijang, size of young Calf) took off as fast as we saw her. Finally, after 5 hours of hard trekking, we reach the peak of Bukit Lutut. Great view of Temburong Vast Rainforest Canopy and as far as Mount Murud of Mulu caves national Park and Lawas in Sarawak.

We set up Camp and prepare dinner. Cicadas go full swing making noise as loud as posible. I think they are competing with us other. During our dinner, Frog and other insect also try to get our attention by making all sort of sound imaginable. Later Civet Cat ( Musang) also come to join us for dinner. they are a bit shy and just wait at the side.
After dinner, we share our experience in Rainforest with all insect, civet cat, Gibbon and other wildlife we can not see but heard them listening to us.
Our camp is built on stilt at a slope. we slept on strecher with a thin plastic sheet on top of us.
During our deep sleep, we are competing with Cicadas, tree Frog, owl, bats on who is making the loudest noise.

Heart of Borneo
Except from Brunei Local News- 20th July 2007
Look forward to listen to all Eco Traveller commend on how to make it be reality. Save Borneo Forest before it is too late!
Heart Of Borneo Beats In Brunei By Suria Rina, Lyna Mohamad and Liza Mohd
Bandar Seri Begawan - The Heart of Romeo vision is fast gaining momentum in the country. The declaration signed in Bali in February this year brought in the commitment of three countries, Brunei, Malaysia and Indonesia to work together to protect the unique rainforests of Borneo.
Considered to be the key centres of biological diversity in the world, it covers approximately 22-0,000 square kilometres of equatorial rainforests and numerous wildlife species shared by the three countries.
The Deputy Minister of Industry and Primary Resources, Dato Paduka Hj Hamdillah bin Hj Abd Wahab stated that the HoB initiative is a big and complex task and it commits three countries to harmonize the implementation of their national efforts to conserve and sustainably manage approximately 240,000 sq km of mainly forested land.
Brunei's part in it will be 58 per cent of its land area, which compared to the total size of the country, is the biggest slice of the HoB.
At the First Tri-Country Implementation

Meeting on the Heart of Borneo — Three Countries, One Conservation Vision held yesterday morning, Dato Hamdillah noted that Brunei is on track in its commitment towards the Heart of Borneo (HoB) vision and that Brunei is offering itself to become the host of the HoB centre.
Lending support to one of the world's largest conservation and sustainable projects in the world is Brunei Shell Petroleum with a BND$203,000 fund to MIPR that forms part of its funding commitment for the Project Implementation Framework of the Heart of Borneo initiative in Brunei Darussalam.
Dr Grahaeme Henderson, Managing Director of Brunei Shell Petroleum at an Moll signing yesterday said that the contribution is central to BSP’s mission of sustainable development of the Nations' precious hydrocarbon resources. It has an equally abiding commitment towards protection and preservation of the environment.
"This commitment finds expression in a whole range of internationally bench marked policies; practices, standards and controls a eared towards environmental sustainability which we have integrated into our business."
Meanwhile 88 different specimens of rainforest trees were planted yesterday morning at the open area of Jalan Carey, previously a staff residential area for Brunei Shell Petroleum (BSP) employees in Kuala Belait.
The initiative will also support the Belait District Office's effort to beautify the district, specifically the area in Dian Carey, which is a popular jogging and recreation area for residents. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
